about freedman
Freedman
-- English noun. Plural: freedmen. Origin: freed + man. 1: A man
who has been freed from slavery --
combines a timeless acoustic sound with an electrifying,
intoxicating flow that's been described as "melodic", "catchy",
"laid back" and "magnificent" (Rootstime).
Words and music are written by Filip Stuerbout. The sound is
developed together with jazz guitarist Marijke Hellemans, who
improvises her solo's. Live Freedman often plays in a traditional
rock 'n roll combo with acoustic guitar, semi-acoustic guitar and
double bass. The EP Couldn't Even Swim (2018) features a quartet,
adding drums. Apparently, it sounds like "Chuck E. Weiss sitting in
a bar on Haight-Ashbury as Tom Waits staggers in" (Keys
and Chords). Between January and April 2019 Couldn't Even
Swim is part of the "Belgian Highlights" collection of the
Brussels Airlines inflight radio.
